Technique 101 – Creating backgrounds with your clear blocks

Technique 101 with Michelle Last

This month we are sharing projects made by inking up the clear blocks and stamping them to create a background for your card.

Flower Shop & Pansy Punch from Stampin Up

I originally wanted to use one large clear block but just wasn’t get the background effect I wanted so I reached for my clear block B and inked it up with smoky slate ink and spritzed it with water from the spritzer bottle.

I then stamped it on the watercolour card background and pressed hard to let the ink soak in and didn’t lift up the block right away, I let it sit for a while to make sure that the paper had soaked up the ink and water.

If you have excess water when you remove the block, simply dab away any excess with kitchen towel or tissue.

I stamped the same block in the same ink twice more to create three blocks on my background.

Backgrounds with clear blocks

I them stamped three identical flowers from the flower shop stamp set and coloured with with Powder Pink and Flirty Flamingo ink and an aqua painter an stuck them on the blocks with a dimensional.

Finally I needed a greeting and die cut the hug using the Lovely Words Thinlit Dies and just snipped the ends of the word so it wasn’t encased in the circle.

A final addition of the glitter enamel dots and it was done!

I cannot wait to see the backgrounds the rest of the blog hoppers have created with clear blocks, lets go visit Frenchie and see her beautiful card.

Lovely Inside & Out Bundle for the Global Design Project

I have a card to share for the Global Design Project sketch challenge using the Lovely Inside & Out Bundle from Stampin’ Up!

Lovely Inside & Out from Stampin Up

It is a very simply sketch and I really encourage you to join in this week and share what you make using the sketch for inspiration.

Here’s how I made it

I used a brand new designer series paper coming in the new autumn/winter catalogue for the background of my card, isn’t it lovely.  You really are in for a treat in September 🙂

I layered the paper and burlap ribbon to give an earthy/natural feel and added the greeting from the Lovely Inside & Out stamp set and cut the ‘hugs’ die cut word from the Lovely Words Thinlits.

I added some gold foil to two of the corners for something different and then fussy cut a small spring of leaves to accent the hugs word. A final wrap of linen thread and it was complete.

Really simply, let’s go and see what the other design team members have made using the same sketch and be sure to check out how to enter this weeks challenge over at the Global Design Project

Butterflies Thinlits from Stampin’ Up!

This week at the Global Design Project we are casing the designer Tanja Solar from Germany.  I have used the Butterflies Thinlits Dies as Tanja using the dragonfly in her beautiful card.    You must pop over to take a look at her lovely blog as she is super talented.  We are currently both in Thailand enjoying the Stampin’ Up! Incentive trip together 🙂

Watercolor Wings from Stampin' Up! case of Tanja Kolar

I kept my card pretty simple this week and added lots of layers and textures.

How I made my Card
  • I cut a rectangle from the Foil Frenzy Speciality DSP and die cut the detailed butterfly using the Butterfly Thinlits.
  • I punched a piece of Pool Party card with the Ticket Tear Border Punch and layered it underneath the foil frenzy rectangle.
  • I cut a length of Pool Party Shimmer Ribbon and glued and stapled it to the foil frenzy rectangle.
  • I stamped a greeting from the Watercolor Wings stamp set onto white cardstock in black ink and cut into a rectangle.
  • I die cut a fancy strip from the Flourish Thinlits in Island Indigo cardstock.
  • Everything was layered up onto my whisper white card base.
  • I then added glue to the body of the butterfly and secured it into the die cut space to hold it to the card but left the wings to move freely.
  • A few rhinestones and it was complete.

Here is the lovely card we are casing this week from Tanja Kolar.

Climbing Orchid from Stampin’ Up!

I have inked up the new Climbing Orchid stamp set from Stampin’ Up for this weeks Global Design Project challenge.  This weeks its a colour challenge and when you see the colours you will be amazed that i was able to create such a muted coloured card.

Climbing Orchid from Stampin Up

The Climbing Orchid stamp set is so pretty with lots of options as it includes 28 stamps for only £24, what a deal!

I also used the Fresh Florals DSP in Lemon Lime Twist as the background and a little Lemon Lime Twist Ombre Ribbon.

Climbing Orchid for the Global Design Project

I coloured the orchid with pool party watercolour pencils and blended them with the wink of stella glitter pen which adds sparkler and blends the colours.

Time to see the colour challenge this week….

#GDP093

I warned you they were bright didn’t I.  I used the slightest splash of Berry Burst in the centre of the Orchid so as not to overwhelm the card.

I really hope you join us this week and make something for this weeks challenge.  Come on over to the Global Design Project to see what the other design team members have made and how to enter your own project to the weekly challenge.

Beautiful Bouquet from Stampin’ Up!

Look at the beautiful array of flowers in the Beautiful Bouquet Stamp Set from Stampin’ Up!  It pairs beautifully with the Jar of Love stamp set which I wanted to use as we are casing Steffi Helmschrott at the Global Design Project this week.

Beautiful Bouquet from Stampin Up

I really enjoyed stamping and die cutting several of the flowers from the Beautiful Bouquet set and then arranging them in the jar from Jar of Love.  I stamped the jar with versa mark and heat embossed it in white embossing powder and heat set it in vellum which was over laid onto a stamped grey jar to add a little dimension.

It meant I could also tie a bow around the top of the jar and secure it in place.

I stamped the greeting using a berry burst marker and a base grey marker and used the Berry Burst to pick out the words picked and friend.

Beautiful Bouquet from Stampin Up

I added a hand drawn line around the edge and a little strip of patterned paper to add some interest.

We are casing Steffi Helmschrott from Germany this week at the Global Design Project.

Steffi is super talented and a past Artisan Design Team member, I’d really recommend you pop over to her blog and take a look at her designs.  This is her card we are to case for this weeks challenge….#GDP092 casing Steffi Helmschrott
